Escape the Everyday

Sublime Self-Catering

“Graig Ddu is a very special place. The house has a timeless quality to it, so much more than a typical holiday rental. The location is so beautiful. It’s surrounded by the garden and trees up a lovely forest track. We enjoyed the walk along the valley to Llanthony Priory, but also just spent time in the garden. The house was a cool, calm escape during the unusually hot weather. Really enjoyed the books and Positive News magazines.”

The Cottage

If you’re in search of the ultimate get away, this tranquil cottage is up there with the best.  There is the feeling that the rest of the world has just evaporated.

It’s ideal for a couple looking to relax in peaceful perfection – an anniversary, a digital detox, a honeymoon.  [see more]

Retreat from the everyday, mundane distractions for a few days to explore the Black Mountains.  You’ll find there are great walks straight from the door, you can explore the local area, or just relax in the garden.

Enjoy the birdsong by day and amazing night skies (the Black Mountains are part of the Brecon Beacons Dark Sky Reserve). Indulge your inner recluse – you can read, write, play cards or board games.  Stock up on food, light the wood-burner, hide the car keys, and relax.

Graig Ddu is the perfect place to unplug and get offline for a few precious days. To help reinforce the retreat atmosphere, we have removed all temptation and made Graig Ddu wifi and TV free. The only tweets you’ll hear are from the birds!

The Accommodation

The Space

Enter through the useful lobby into a spacious kitchen.  Up a step and into the sitting room – French windows lead into the garden and there is a wood-burner for chilly evenings.  Central heating.  There is also a ‘cloakroom’ with a door to the garden and a downstairs loo. [see more]

Upstairs

The Main Bedroom has a beautiful view over the garden. There is a standard double bed, with an elegant shower and basin in the corner.

Bathroom This also overlooks garden.  There is a shower over the bath, loo and a basin

Spare Bedroom can accommodate another couple. It has a day bed which easily converts into a super-king or 2 singles. (Small additional charge for laundry and cleaning.)

Around and About

The Black Mountains

The great domed moorland of the ancient Black Mountains lies on the Eastern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. These ancient hills are far less visited than the Beacons, and equally renowned for their beauty.  If you are looking to escape from other people, Graig Ddu is ideal.

The Llanthony Valley runs adjacent to Offa’s Dyke, and the wider area has many castles – Raglan, White Castle, Skenfrith and Grosmont to name a few.

Pub Grub

There are 2 traditional pubs in the hamlet of Llanthony, within 1 mile of the cottage.  Both offer hearty pub grub and are easily walkable along a footpath from the forest track. One is in the crypt of the ruins of the magnificent Llanthony Abbey – well worth a visit in its own right.

Like many pubs these days their opening hours are seasonal, with the emphasis on the weekend.  Best to look online for information or call.

The Half Moon – 07767 717216

The Llanthony Priory Cellar Bar – https://www.llanthonypriory.co.uk

Slightly further afield, but well worth a visit are The Crown at Pantygelli (T: 01873 853314 NP7 7HR) and The Hunters Moon at Llangattock Lingoed (T: 01873 821419   NP7 8RR)

For Michelin stars you’ll need to go further afield.

Local shop

The nearest shop is at the Skirrid Garage at Llanfihangel Crucorney – 6 miles away, (at the bottom of the valley) and stocks most essential items.

For main supermarkets, Abergavenny is 12 miles away, or you can drive the spectacular mountain road over Gospel Pass to Hay on Wye.
